Dieter Voges studied physics at the University Hannover and the Ludwig Maximilians University (LMU) Munich, where he received his diploma in 1992 finishing with a work in surface science at the Max-Planck-Institute (MPI) for Plasma Physics.

At the MPI for Biochemistry, he worked on molecular biology and protein biochemistry and studied the structure of proteins using X-ray crystallography and electron tomography. Further, he investigated the description of electrostatics in proteins. He received his doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) with summa cum laude from the Technical University Munich in 1995.

Supported by the Humboldt-Foundation, Dieter Voges worked until 1997 at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and until 1999 at the MPI for Biochemistry with different research projects. He worked in the bio-technology industry from 1999 until 2006 in the fields data analysis, consulting and software development.

Between 2006 to 2009, Dieter Voges was trained as candidate in the patent firm Diehl & Partner. In 2009, he passed the German patent bar examination. In 2010, he joined DHS Patentanwalts GmbH and qualified as a European Patent Attorney.
